Match Recap
In one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Round of 32, Morocco continued their reputation as the nightmare opponent for European giants, beating the Netherlands on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey. Cody Gakpo gave the Dutch the lead in the second half, but Morocco's resolve — the same quality that carried them to the semi-finals in Qatar 2022 — produced a stunning 91st-minute equaliser from Issa Diop to force extra time. Neither side could find a winner across the additional 30 minutes, with goalkeeper Bono once again proving why he is considered one of the best penalty-shootout specialists in the world. Morocco captain Neil El Aynaoui missed the very first penalty of the shootout, hitting the crossbar, but the Atlas Lions regrouped, with Andries Noppert unable to deny them as Ismael Saibari — who had struggled to find his best form during the match — stepped up to smash home the winning kick. Morocco's win continues their remarkable record against European opposition at World Cups, following famous victories over Spain and Portugal on penalties and in normal time at Qatar 2022, and sets up a mouthwatering Round of 16 clash with co-hosts Canada on July 4 in Houston.
