Match Recap
Paraguay pulled off the biggest upset of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far, eliminating Germany on penalties after a pulsating 1-1 draw through 120 minutes at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Julio Enciso gave Paraguay a shock lead before Kai Havertz levelled for Germany, who also had what looked like a legitimate extra-time goal controversially disallowed by VAR. Neither side could find a winner across two periods of extra time, sending the match to penalties, where goalkeeper Orlando Gill produced more of the heroics that had already defined Paraguay's tournament, following his role in their famous ten-man win over Türkiye in the group stage. José Canale converted the decisive spot-kick to send Paraguay through 4-3 on penalties, continuing their reputation as the most resilient and difficult team to beat at this World Cup. For Germany, who had scored seven goals in their opener against Curaçao and looked among the tournament favourites, it is a stunning early exit that will prompt serious questions back home.
