Keito Nakamura

Keito Nakamura entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of Japan's quieter names — but two group stage performances later, he has become one of the Samurai Blue's most important players.

Born on July 28, 2000, in Abiko, Chiba, Nakamura began his career at Gamba Osaka before moving to Europe, eventually settling at Stade Reims in France's Ligue 1, where he plays as a direct, pacey left winger. He represented Japan at every youth level from Under-15 through Under-17, scoring four goals in four games at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup before Japan were eliminated by England. He made his senior international debut in March 2023 against Uruguay.

Nakamura's World Cup breakout moment came in Japan's tournament opener against the Netherlands. In the 57th minute, he struck a right-footed equaliser to bring Japan level at 1-1 in what finished as a thrilling 2-2 draw — one of the matches of the tournament so far. He followed it up by playing a key role in Japan's historic 4-0 demolition of Tunisia, the largest victory margin ever recorded by an Asian nation at a FIFA World Cup.

The performances did not go unnoticed online. Following his goal against the Netherlands, Nakamura's Instagram following jumped by close to 300,000, a rise of over 70% — making him one of the World Cup's standout social media risers of the tournament's second week.

With Japan sitting level with the Netherlands at the top of Group F on four points, Nakamura's pace and directness on the left flank could prove decisive as the Samurai Blue chase a place in the knockout rounds for the first time since reaching the last 16 in Qatar 2022.
