Match Recap
The United States reached the Round of 16 for the first time since 2002 with a gritty 2-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara — but it came at a cost. Folarin Balogun, the tournament's breakout USMNT star, opened the scoring with his third goal of the competition before being controversially sent off after VAR reviewed an apparent stamp on Tarik Muharemović. The red card — which Balogun appeared to dispute as unintentional — will rule him out of the Round of 16 clash against Belgium and sparked furious debate. Even with ten men, the USA never looked like conceding, with the defence marshalled superbly by veterans Tim Ream and Chris Richards. Malik Tillman sealed the win with a stunning direct free kick in the closing stages, setting the Levi's Stadium crowd into raptures. Mauricio Pochettino's side now face Belgium in Seattle on July 7 — a tough ask, particularly without Balogun, but a game the USMNT will enter with enormous belief and home crowd support behind them.
