Match Recap
Switzerland reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1954, beating Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes at BC Place in Vancouver. After the extraordinary drama of Argentina's comeback against Egypt earlier in the day, the second match of the double-header was a tense, cautious affair that, for all its tactical intrigue, struggled to match the first half of the day's entertainment. Neither Luis Díaz for Colombia nor Breel Embolo for Switzerland were able to make their quality count in front of goal, with both keepers relatively untroubled until the shootout. Davinson Sánchez hit the bar for Colombia in the shootout, handing Switzerland the momentum, and Rúben Vargas buried the decisive kick to send the Swiss through — overcoming a long-standing penalty shootout record that had previously haunted Swiss sides on the biggest stages. The win is one of Switzerland's greatest-ever footballing achievements. They will now face defending champions Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday, July 11 — a quarter-final that, on paper, appears deeply unfair to a Switzerland side that has conceded just once across their entire tournament. Colombia, who had been one of the tournament's most stylish sides throughout the group stage, depart the tournament without the result their performances deserved.
