Canada's historic World Cup journey came to a bittersweet end in Houston as Morocco produced a clinical second-half display to win 3-0 and advance to the quarter-finals for a second successive tournament. The scoreline was flattering to the Atlas Lions — Canada dominated the opening half, pressing high and creating the better chances, but were unable to find the breakthrough against a resilient Morocco defence. Morocco also suffered an early blow when Ismael Saibari, one of their standout performers throughout the tournament, was forced off with a hamstring injury in the 22nd minute, replaced by Soufiane Rahimi. The second half was a different story. Azzedine Ounahi capitalised on a crisp cutback from Achraf Hakimi from a free-kick to open the scoring in the 50th minute, firing a low shot through traffic and past Maxime Crepeau. The goal knocked the wind out of Canada. Ounahi struck again in the 82nd minute as Morocco hit Canada on the counter, Brahim Díaz teeing him up to fire into the top corner as the co-hosts pushed desperately for an equaliser. Rahimi, who had replaced the injured Saibari, added a late third in stoppage time from another devastating Díaz assist, with Brahim Díaz recording a new African record of four World Cup assists in a single tournament. Canada, denied their captain Alphonso Davies for much of the tournament due to fitness issues, bow out with their heads held high — they won their first-ever World Cup knockout match just a week ago, and their journey to the Round of 16 has laid the foundation for a generation of Canadian football to build on. Morocco, meanwhile, advance to face the winners of France vs Paraguay in Boston on July 9, dreaming of surpassing their own historic semi-final run from Qatar 2022.
