Match Recap
Egypt made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, advancing to the Round of 16 for the first time in the country's history after beating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead with a superb near-post header in the 13th minute, converting an incoming cross after running in behind his own blocked shot. Australia pushed hard for an equaliser and found it in a painful manner for Egypt — Mohamed Hany put through his own net, the second own goal by the same player at this edition, a record that will haunt him. With neither side able to find a winner through 120 minutes, the match went to penalties, where Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shenawy was the hero, diving to his left to deny two Australian spot-kicks. Mohamed Salah, who had played a key role throughout the tournament, was composed from the spot and embraced teammates in tears at the final whistle. For Australia, the knockout stage remains elusive — they have now played five World Cup knockout matches without a win.
