Match Recap
Mexico became the first team to clinch a spot in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, edging South Korea 1-0 at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara in front of a roaring home crowd. The game's only goal came in the 50th minute when Luis Romo capitalised on a costly mistake from South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, who came rushing off his line, mistimed a jump for a routine ball, and spilled it into the path of the unmarked midfielder. Romo made no mistake, lifting the ball into an empty net. South Korea pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages but goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced a string of crucial saves to preserve El Tri's perfect record. The win sends Mexico through with six points from two games and top spot in Group A already secured on home soil.
